 The Hurds came from Somersetshire, England in 1630 and first settled in Windsor, Ct. Genealogists disagree over the first John Hurd in Windsor. Some say he was the Father of Adam & John and others saw he was the brother of Adam. The brothers, Adam & John, soon moved to Stratford, Ct. and were landowners. Adam's son John was among the first settlers in Woodbury, Ct. He was a miller there around 1689 and built a house in the hollow/near his gristmill. The house was extended by succeeding generations. It is now owned by the Old Woodbury Historical Society and has been restored. It is the oldest structure at its original site in Litchfield County. Succeeding generations, David, Thaddeus & JUSTUS lived in Connecticut.

 JUSTUS HURD was born 11 Apr 1788 in Roxbury, Ct. to Thaddeus & Elizabeth (Wakely) Hurd. The family moved to Greenville, N.Y. JUSTUS married RUTH BOOTH daughter of Samuel & Jerusha (Walker) Booth, of Stratford, Ct. on 02 Nov 1813. They had four sons, all born in Greenville, N.Y.  The two youngest, twins Henry & HARVEY, were born 07 Mar 1825.  Sometime after 1835, JUSTUS moved to Ohio.  It is assumed they traveled from Greenville, N.Y. via the Erie Canal as far as Buffalo, N.Y. and then by wagon along the south shore of Lake Erie.

RUTH (BOOTH) HURD’S immigrant ancestors were Richard Booth, born in England, ca. 1697/8, and Elizabeth (Hawley) Booth.  The Booths were early settlers of Stratford. Ct. where Boothe Park is named for the family. The lineage of the Booths from Richard is Joseph & Hannah (Wilcoxson) Booth, Joseph & Mahitabel (Beach) Booth, Joseph & Sarah (Blackman) Booth, Joseph & Jerusha (Walker) Booth and RUTH (BOOTH) HURD. All the wives' families’ were settlers. in Ct. in the 1600’s.

JUSTUS- & RUTH (BOOTH).HURD. settled southwest of .Norwalk, .Huron County, Ohio where they purchased 123.33 acres of land in 1838. Included with this land were a sawmill and a flourmill. JUSTUS paid $2,936.75 cash for this property. JUSTUS HURD was a member of the vestry of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Norwalk.  JUSTUS & RUTH (BOOTH) HURD are buried in the churchyard of St. Paul's.  Their burial marker is in good condition today.

HARVEY HURD married PARMELIA ALMIRA (CLARK), daughter of Alanson & Abigail (DuBois) Clark, 23 Nov 1848 in Peru, Ohio.  Alanson Clark was an early resident of Huron County, Ohio where he farmed. Land records show he owned land by 1847. He also was a town councilman for New Haven, Ohio. Alanson & Abigail (DuBois) Clark are buried in New Haven Cemetery.

Abigail's (DuBois) ancestry goes back to Louis DuBois, the immigrant from Wicres, France. He was a patentee of New Paltz, N.Y. and the leader of the Huguenot settlers in New Paltz, Ulster County, N.Y. Abigail's parents were Tobias & Sarah (Hickox) DuBois. Tobias DuBois was among the original land purchasers in Richland County, Ohio.

 HARVEY HURD was. a farmer in Huron County and also was a miller.  As "of this writing we have not been able to locate the graves of HARVEY & PARMELIA (CLARK) HURD, believed to be in Huron County.
